Ultrasound Q & A

Why should I get an ultrasound? If I am considering abortion, do I really need an ultrasound?

An ultrasound can help you make informed decisions about your pregnancy and health before an abortion. It can help you determine the viability, age, and location of your pregnancy.

Reason for an ultrasound:
  • Determine gestational age: An ultrasound can more accurately date your pregnancy than period tracking apps. This helps determine which abortion procedures are available.
  • Check for an ectopic pregnancy: An ectopic pregnancy occurs when the embryo attaches anywhere outside of the uterus. This is a medical emergency that can cause life-threatening bleeding and infection. This is not a viable pregnancy.
  • Discover the viability of your pregnancy: An ultrasound can help determine if your pregnancy is progressing. If your pregnancy is not viable, there is no reason for an abortion.
      Benefits of an ultrasound:
      • Helps you feel confident in what options are best and safest for you
      • Provides valuable information that can be critical for protecting your health

Will an ultrasound tell me how far along I am? Why is that important in my pregnancy decision?

An ultrasound is the best tool to determine how far along your pregnancy is. Your nurse will measure the size of your baby in order to determine this information via ultrasound. This is important because if you are considering an abortion, this helps determine which abortion procedures are available.

Can an ultrasound tell me who the father of my baby is?

Ultrasounds can’t determine who the father of the baby is. However, they can give you an idea of when you conceived. This can help you narrow down who the potential father is, based on your sexual encounter(s) around that time. The only way to determine who the father is is through a paternity DNA test.

      Does TruCare provide late-term ultrasounds?

TruCare does not provide late term ultrasounds. If you are late-term in your pregnancy, the best place to get an ultrasound is at your OBGYN office. We can provide you with a list of OBGYN’s in the Austin area that take Medicaid.

How far along do I have to be to get an ultrasound?

Due to the progression of pregnancy, the best visibility for an ultrasound is at least 5 weeks and 5 days from your last menstrual period. Being 5 weeks and 5 days from your period does not mean you are automatically eligible for an ultrasound. Please give us a call to get more information about if or when you would be eligible for a free ultrasound.

      Are ultrasounds free at TruCare?

All of our pregnancy services at Trucare are completely free of charge, including ultrasounds.

If I think I am having a miscarriage, can I get an ultrasound at TruCare to confirm?

If you believe you are having a miscarriage, you will not be eligible to receive an ultrasound at Trucare. You should head to the nearest emergency department so that you can be evaluated for a miscarriage and provided with medical treatment if necessary.

Will I receive an ultrasound at my first appointment?

We evaluate ultrasound eligibility on a case by case basis at the discretion of the nursing team. Please give us a call to get more information about if or when you will be eligible for a free ultrasound.

Does TruCare give ultrasounds to determine gender?

TruCare does not give ultrasounds to determine gender. Gender must be confirmed via blood test or scan at your OBGYN office.

Can TruCare confirm the health of my baby (or determine abnormalities) at my ultrasound appointment?

TruCare cannot confirm the health of your baby at the ultrasound appointment, as our ultrasounds are limited in scope. We are able to check for location of the pregnancy (uterus or ectopic), gestational age (size of baby), and cardiac activity (heartbeat). All other information about your pregnancy must be confirmed by your OBGYN. We are able to provide you with a list of OBGYNs in the Austin area who take Medicaid.

Will I have to have a pregnancy test first to get an ultrasound at TruCare?

In order to provide an ultrasound for you, we must conduct our own pregnancy test here in the clinic. This is because home pregnancy tests are not all the same, and some are less accurate than others. We must have a positive result from the pregnancy test in order to perform an ultrasound.
